Demanding Democracy After Three Mile Island

Description

Goldsteen and Schorr document the development of mistrust of the government from the nuclear power industry and the citizens near Three Mile Island regarding the 1979 disaster at the plant. (Environmental Studies)

All but four of the texts of the stories reprinted here are versions that Mansfield herself revised or selected. Twenty excerpts from Mansfield's correspondence address the craft of writing and her own views on her work, subjects rarely broached in her many letters. "Criticism" includes eighteen essays that collectively suggest the changing emphases in how Mansfield has been Service-Learning in Design and Planning : Educating at the Boundaries pdf read by critics. Contributors include fellow writers Rebecca West, T. S. Eliot, Katherine Anne Porter, V. S. Pritchett, Elizabeth Bowen, and Frank O' Connor, as well as biographers Claire Tomalin and Vincent O'Sullivan, among others. A Selected Bibliography is also included.

Classical Social Theory in Use : Interpretation and Application for Educators and Other Non-Specialists

Description

This book provides an introduction to classical social theory through discussion, application, and synthesis of the work of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and George Herbert Mead. Rather than merely summarizing and evaluating their continuing influence, their ideas and ways of reasoning are applied in thoroughly developed fashion to contemporary issues and historical events of enduring importance. In the process, contributions of these three very different authors are used to complement each other and are eventually synthesized, making clear that they can be melded into one multilevel, even if tentative and rudimentary, theoretical perspective. The book is intended to systematically and compactly introduce the most useful concepts of the three classical theorists. However, new concepts are typically introduced as part of the narrative, rather than in box-text definitional fashion. This is consistent with the books primary purpose: to enable the reader to begin to think like Marx, Durkheim, and Mead, especially insofar as their work can be synthesized into one point of view, dealing with inter-related macro-level, middle range, and micro-level social phenomena. The section on Marx will be longer than the sections on Durkheim and Mead. In part, the length of the discussion of Marx's work is due to use of this section to begin introducing pertinent ideas of Durkheim and Mead.

With the exception of the first four stories, all were written within a period of ten years. These stories, and the letters following, reflect the urgency of a writer who knew her time was limited. All but four of the texts of the stories reprinted here are versions that Mansfield herself revised or selected. Change: Principles of Problem Formation and Problem Resolution

Description

This classic book, available in paperback for the very first time, explores why some people can successfully change their lives and others cannot. Here famed psychologist Paul Watzlawick presents what is still often perceived as a radical idea: that the solutions to our problems are inherently embedded in the problems themselves. Tackling the age-old questions surrounding persistence and change, the book asks why problems arise and are perpetuated in some instances but easily resolved in others. Incorporating ideas about human communication, marital and family therapy, the therapeutic effects of paradoxes and of action-oriented techniques of problem resolution, Change draws much from the field of psychotherapy.

Wilbur Smith: The Quest

The Quest

Description

Wilbur Smith returns with the final part of his thrilling Egyptian series. Following on from River God, The Seventh Scroll and Warlock, The Quest continues the story of the warlock, Taita, wise in the lore of the ancient Gods and a master of magic and the supernatural. Egypt is struck by a series of terrible plagues that cripple the Kingdom, and then the ultimate disaster follows. The Nile fails. The waters that nourish and sustain the land dry up. Something catastrophic is taking place in the distant and totally unexplored depths of Africa from where the mighty river springs. In desperation, Pharoah sends for Taita, the only man who might be able to reach the source of the Nile and discover the cause of all their woes. Yet none of them can have any idea of the terrible enemy that lies in ambush for the warlock in those mysterious lands at the end of their world. 'You can get lost in Wilbur Smith' Stephen King 'Smith writes with a fresh, crisp style ...full of zest. A gratifying read, long awaited by his legion of admirers' Daily Express

"Proxy"moves blindingly fast through a world of danger gone viral. It's science-fiction on a joy ride full of deceit and imagination. "DeseretNews" Erin Hunter's #1 nationally bestselling Warriors series continues in Warriors: Power of Three-now featuring fierce new art. The second book in this third series, Warriors: Power of Three #2: Dark River, brings more adventure, intrigue, and thrilling battles to the epic world of the warrior Clans. Lionpaw, Hollypaw, and Jaypaw, grandchildren of the Clan leader Firestar, are thriving as ThunderClan apprentices. Yet their new responsibilities bring new dangers, and each young cat is about The Quest free download pdf to discover darkness: in the past, in the Clans-and in themselves. Two controversial thinkers discuss a timeless but nonetheless urgent question: should philosophy interfere in the world? Nothing less than philosophy is at stake because, according to Badiou, philosophy is nothing but interference and commitment and will not be restrained by academic discipline. Philosophy is strange and new, and yet speaks in the name of all - as Badiou shows with his theory of universality. Similarly, Zizek believes that the philosopher must intervene, contrary to all expectations, in the key issues of the time. He can offer no direction, but this only shows that the question has been posed incorrectly: it is valid to change the terms of the debate and settle on philosophy as abnormality and excess. At once an invitation to philosophy and an introduction to the thinking of two of the most topical and controversial philosophers writing today, this concise volume will be of great interest to students and general readers alike.

Picasso's Line Drawings and Prints

Description

Demonstrating the artist's major themes, techniques, and styles, 44 drawings ? dating from 1905 to 1954 ? perfectly capture the master draughtsman's incredible line: 1905 circus family, portraits of Diaghilev and Balzac, cubist studies, neo-classical nudes, and mythological scenes. Media include lithograph, drypoint, etching, and pen-and-ink.

Synopsis: Jacques Ellul (1912-1994) was one of the world's last great polymaths and one of the most important Christian Picasso's Line Drawings and Prints download PDF thinkers of his time, engaging the world with a simplicity, sincerity, courage, and passion that few have matched. However, Ellul is an often misunderstood thinker. As more than fifty books and over one thousand articles bear his name, embarking on a study of Ellul's thought can be daunting. This book provides an introduction to Ellul's life and work, analyzing and assessing his thought across the most important themes of his scholarship. Readers will see that his remarkably broad field of vision, clarity of focus, and boldly prophetic voice make his work worth reading and considering, rereading and discussing. Endorsements: "Understanding Jacques Ellul is an academic treasure. . . . The complicated correlation between Ellul's biblical thinking and his social theoretical work is developed with extraordinary sophistication. This book lives up to its own internal promise, demonstrating with impeccable scholarship Ellul's distinctiveness as a Christian thinker." --Clifford Christians, University of Illinois "Understanding Jacques Ellul is a useful introduction to the prolific author, who was a sociologist, historian, and a Christian. This book is the first to give equal weight to his secular and Christian views. Given Ellul's voluminous writings, the authors had to be selective, and their choice of topics is excellent." --Richard Stivers, Professor of Sociology, Illinois State University "Jacques Ellul was one of the twentieth century's most insightful Christian analysts of contemporary society. His writings remain of great value for Christian mission today. This study shows his continued relevance through its accessible, well-informed introduction and overview of some of the many key themes in his extensive corpus. I hope it introduces Ellul's thought to a new generation of Christian disciples and scholars." --Andrew Goddard, Associate Director, Kirby Laing Institute of Christian Ethics "This revealing overview of Ellul's life and work enables us to grasp the underlying unity of his principal interests: communication and Christianity. . . . This balanced study will be of prime service to anyone who [wishes to] understand Ellul's thought and insights." --Eric McLuhan, author of Know Thyself: Action and Perception Author Biography: Jeffrey P. Greenman is Associate Dean of Biblical and Theological Studies and Professor of Christian Ethics at Wheaton College (IL). Read M. Schuchardt is Associate Professor of Communication at Wheaton College (IL). Noah J. Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection

Description

Destined to be a classic enjoyed by both the professional scholar and the lay person, this comparative religion book contains a startling perspective of the extraordinary history of the Egyptian religion and its profound influence upon the later Christian faith. "Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection" uses a massive amount of primary sources and the works of highly credentialed authorities in relevant fields to demonstrate that the popular gods Horus and Jesus possessed many characteristics and attributes in common. Drawing from thousands of ancient Egyptian texts in an assortment of translations along with the original language, as well as modern research in a number of other languages, controversial independent scholar of comparative religion and mythology D.M. Murdock puts together an astonishing amount of fascinating information that shows many of our most cherished religious beliefs and concepts did not appear suddenly out of the blue but have long histories in numerous cultures found around the globe, including and especially in the glorious Land of the Pharaohs. D.M. Murdock, also known as "Acharya S," is the author of the bestselling books "The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold"; "Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled"; and "Who Was Jesus? Fingerprints of The Christ." Ms Murdock's books focus largely on the history and origins of religion, dating back thousands of years and encompassing religious ideologies and beliefs of a wide variety that nevertheless reveal common cultural heritage and a keen interest in and reverence for the natural world.

The two volumes are presented together in a specially designed acrylic slipcase. Harmony has always gone after what she wants with single-minded determination, from her independence to her education to her career in interior design. She never expected her youthful crush on Barrett to develop into something deeper. And she s not about to let some ridiculous man rules or her brother stand in her way. THE The Lords of the North free download pdf HORRIBLE HISTORY OF THE WORLD presents the foul but fascinating story of humans from brain-nibbling Neanderthals to terrified teenage soldiers in the twentieth century. Readers can discover why Alexander the Great banned beards, what smelly sport was played by samurai warriors and who tried to bump off her enemies with a cake made with poisoned bath-water. It's all you ever need to know about the wicked world - all the gore and more!

The Lords of the North

Description

Enter a world where bloody battles, and heroic deeds combine in the historic struggle to unite Britain in the face of a common enemy. The third instalment in Bernard Cornwell's King Alfred series, follows on from the outstanding previous novels The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman. The year is 878 and the Vikings have been thrown out of Wessex. Uhtred, fresh from fighting for Alfred in the battle to free Wessex, travels north to seek revenge for his father's death, killed in a bloody raid by Uhtred's old enemy, renegade Danish lord, Kjartan. While Kjartan lurks in his formidable stronghold of Dunholm, the north is overrun by chaos, rebellion and fear. Together with a small band of warriors, Uhtred plans his attack on his enemy, revenge fuelling his anger, resolute on bloody retribution. But, he finds himself betrayed and ends up on a desperate slave voyage to Iceland. Rescued by a remarkable alliance of old friends and enemies, he and his allies, together with Alfred the Great, are free to fight once more in a battle for power, glory and honour. 'The Lords of the North' is a tale of England's making, a powerful story of betrayal, struggle and romance, set in an England torn apart by turmoil and upheaval.

The two volumes are presented together in a specially designed acrylic slipcase. Harmony has always gone after what she wants with single-minded determination, from her independence to her education to her career in interior design. Nurturing Language and Learning: Development of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Infants and Toddlers

Description

Regardless of a child's hearing abilities, increasing parents' knowledge about their baby or toddler's expected development and their confidence in their parenting abilities supports positive early interactions and developmental progress. Fortunately, as early hearing screening has become widespread, more information is available about development of deaf and hard-of-hearing infants and ways to best support their developing learning and language abilities. This book combines a review of up-to-date research with theory and first-hand observations to provide a framework for parents and professionals as they promote developmental achievements of infants and toddlers with limited hearing. In what ways is development of deaf and hard-of-hearing babies and toddlers like that of those with typical hearing? What specific challenges are likely to be faced by child and parent - and when are they most likely to occur? What modifications in parenting and caregiver interactive behaviors can help avoid or overcome these challenges? A strong, supportive foundation for optimal learning throughout life grows from early, positive, and responsive interactive experiences. This book provides information and guidelines for professionals and parents helping deaf and hard-of-hearing infants and toddlers build that foundation.

Steven Gould: Jumper: Griffin's Story

Jumper: Griffin's Story

Description

Jumper: Griffin's Story was written by Gould to compliment the 2008 film Jumper starring Samuel L Jackson. The novel explores the life of Griffin O'Connor as he uses his teleportation powers to hunt his parents' murderers. Rule One: Never jump where someone can see you. Rule Two: Never jump near home. Rule Three: Never jump to or from the same place twice. Rule Four: Only jump if you have, only if they find you. The first time it happened, Griffin O'Connor was only five years old; he jumped from the steps of the Martyr's Memorial in Oxford, in front of a busload of tourists. The second time it happened his family had to cross an ocean to protect his secret. But four years later Griff accidentally broke his parent's rules and jumped again. That night the men from Oxford found them, and by morning his parents had been murdered, leaving Griff alone, wounded and only nine years old. Griffin grows up with only two goals: to survive, and to kill the people who want him dead. And a Jumper bent on revenge is not going to let anything stand in his way.

They vividly recall the family, friends, and tribal world they left far behind them and their desperate efforts to keep track of one another. This is a captivating memoir of Sudan and a powerful portrait of war as seen through the eyes of children. Hidden City: Adventures and Explorations in Dublin

Description

Karl Whitney's Hidden City: a brilliant portrait of Dublin Dublin is a city much visited and deeply mythologized. In Hidden City, Karl Whitney - who has been described by Gorse as 'Dublin's best psychogeographer since James Joyce' - explores the places the city's denizens and tourists easily overlook. Whitney finds hidden places and untold stories in underground rivers of the Liberties, on the derelict sites once earmarked for skyscrapers in Ballsbridge, in the twenty Dublin homes once inhabited by Joyce, and on the beach at Loughshinny, where he watches raw sewage being pumped into the shallows of the Irish Sea. Hidden City shows us a Dublin - or a collection of Dublins - that we've never seen before, a city hiding in plain sight. 'Ingenious and affectionate ...It would be great then if the Americans and the Germans who come to Dublin in large numbers, and claim to love the city, had Whitney's book in hand rather than, say, Ulysses, or some official guide book' Colm Toibin, Guardian 'Marvellous ...The author's eye for observation is second to none ...Hidden City is a necessary corrective to a heritage-influenced view of the past and present: for Whitney reminds us that all our environments are human - created for and maintained by us, for good and ill' Daily Telegraph 'This captivating urban tale has soul, scholarship and insights aplenty' Sunday Times 'Warm, charming, sharp and informative, this brilliant book is an indispensable guide to contemporary Dublin' Sunday Business Post 'Oh, how the capital has cried out for a book like this . ..a fascinating travelogue that will make you look at Dublin with fresh eyes' Irish Independent
